Could somebody tell me why the life of a writer is believed to be one of unending glamour and excitement?

This weekend, I wrote, slept, wrote, ate, wrote, did the laundry, scrubbled cat belly, wrote, answered a few embarrassingly overdue emails, wrote, signed some books for an SRM bookstore order, wrote, updated the Saltation webpage (only 554 books left for adoption!) and, um, wrote.

You'd think that I'd have something to show for all this industry, but you'd be wrong. The days when I could press out 4,000 words in a day are apparently gone forever. Guess I'll just have to write shorter books.

Here in beautiful Central Maine, we're looking at showers on the overnight, and the possibility of thunderstorms on the morrow (yay, thunderstorms!)

And how was your weekend?

It's not?

Oh, wait, that's right. You don't speak Klingon.

Seriously, it makes all the difference.

That, and a few, judicious post-hypnotic (not to say, self-delusional) suggestions.

:D

They spoil it for everybody.

Might be that some successful writers (not good writers, just successful) work the party and talk show circuit blathering on about how much fun they're having instead of going back to the work of writing.

Walked dogs. Wrote. Grocery shopping. Errands. Lawn mowing. Wrote. Dr Who. Slept. More dog walking. Wrote. Napped. Trimmed horrendously overgrown shrub. Watched baseball. May write some more.

Only 1000 words so far this weekend. Redoing the beginning for the nth time. I may have it this time. Maybe.

Woke up Saturday, ate, and went to the airport. Sat there. Got on plane, sat again. Got off at Frankfurt, found next gate, sat there. Did enjoy a wurst from the stand, although shamelessly overpriced. Got on delayed plane, sat for way too many hours to arrive back in Japan on Sunday morning. Got off, found bus, sat for two more hours. Got home, unpacked. Went to store, got water, juice, and lunch. Went home. Collapsed for the rest of the day -- apparently the stress of sitting for many hours in airports and airplanes reduces the brain and body to a puddle.

Travel is the great broadener, although which part of the anatomy gets broader is an open issue.

As for why the writing life is considered glamorous and exciting? Life is always wilder on the other side? Lack of knowledge breeds envy and desire? Who knows what goes on behind closed doors?

And my weekend?

Strange. For the first time since I bought this house, I was the only human sleeping in it last night. Very odd. The kids are expected home from their whirlwind trip to NYC any moment now, and I'm strangely sad that the semi-silence is over. No noises (save the occasional barks and mews and so forth) that I didn't initiate or turn on and off with a switch.

I kind of liked it, but I'm also glad it was temporary....

My weekend?

Compost and mulch were purchased and unloaded (by me) at both my mom's house and mine. Compost was spread. Some mulch was spread. Annuals were purchased, and also unloaded at both households, but have not yet been planted. Which is just as well, as we've got a Frost Advisory tonight, so I've just covered some flats and moved other stuff into either the house or my car. Impatiens do not take any frost at all well. I'm assuming the perennials will be fine.

Unexpected Friday off. Went in anyways to buy lunch for the MA's. Got microdermabrasion. Dinner out with friends. Watched Prince Caspian. Worked all weekend: sick people, skin consults, laser treatments. Dinner meeting at Thai restaurant to hammer out next 2 months work schedule. Sadly my life is nothing like Grey's Anatomy or ER. Scrubs, maybe?

weekend

Went to Hersheypark in the rain with teenage kids. Rode the Carousel (so the day was a success) and thought of you while picking out a horse. My son bravely was seen in public riding the carousel with me (daughter hid on the far side) and commented on how that old ride could really pick up speed. : ) Roller coasters aren't so much fun in the rain... but the carousel was just dandy.

Otherwise, did grocery shopping, laundry, dust-bunny destroying, and other domestic duties.

My children were at their father's house. My husband was at Meridian War Muster (Society for Creative Anachronism event). I was home with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Horde. We read books (three or was it four?), ate, and slept, got up at ate again, then did some more sleeping. There were two hot, soaky baths in there. Oh yes, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Horde did amuse themselves by bringing in three crickets and one rather large dragonfly (approximately 4.5" long) for our amusement. "See mom? Toys that jump! Look! They go much higher than some of our toys! Jump, toy, jump! Look at that toy go! Wheee!"

What did YOU do last weekend?

I went camping in the wilds of Oquossuc, Maine. The weather cooperated marvelously. Every kid I saw was having a grand time. The Rendezvous was a great success!
My Troop and Venture Crew are keeping me very busy. I can't remember the last time I slept in my own bed for a whole week, but it HAS been a while! I might get more done at home, if it weren't for these 'darn kids', but I certainly would NOT have as much fun.
