Today being Friday, there was no school. Steve and I rose in our own good time, had breakfast, made phone calls and eventually meandered out in the direction of the Big City of Augusta, with the intention of petitioning the Ghods of Tripilay to provide auspicious signs, portents, and of course numbers, for our upcoming trip to Reno and Minneapolis.

Off we went, cross-country, arriving to find that the Ghods had relocated to another place. This stratagem proved vain, and we found them despite it.

We had discovered for ourselves that scheduling the train trip to and from Reno was relatively simple; it was the addition of Minneapolis to the itinerary that provoked the devilish details. One is told that it is often thus, with Minneapolis.

In any case, and some while later, we came away from Tripleay, having had our courses truly plotted and our credit card read. Poor credit card.

May I just say? I believe that I’ll be well and truly sick to death of Chicago Union Station by the time this trip is done.

Also? I think I need more ebooks.

We came home through a patchwork of sunlight and downpour, had lunch and got down to work, which in my case was linking up all the free chapters of Lee and Miller material available from Baen to the Pinbeam Books site, and balancing the checkbook.

Tomorrow, I need to do something about all this unfinished fiction lying about the place, and to register the domain for the upcoming short story site. Finding an acceptable domain name was harder than you might imagine. It was, at least, harder that I imagined. In any case, that step is at last done, and now all I need to do is build the website. And write some stories.

Piece o’cake.

I hope everyone who celebrates July Fourth as a holiday has a lovely one. Me, I hope that the town has failed of hiring stunt jets to overfly the parade this year. I could do without the adrenaline surge.

. . .only eight more days of school.

GHOST SHIP

Just had an eamil from Uncle Hugo's that my GHOST SHIP copies are now in the mail. I will begin lurking in wait for my mail person starting the middle of the week. Hey, I know that's pushing it and I already have my e-ARC copy loaded on my brand new Kindle, but I like physical books, real dead tree copy BOOKS, hardbacks preferred. Once I have GHOST SHIP in hand, I can begin the wait for DRAGON SHIP, the sequel to BALANCE OF TRADE and "George" for my next new Liaden fix. And of course there is the promise of short stories, sort of a bon bon to briefly satisfy the craving before a main meal arrives in the form of another full length book. When is DRAGON SHIP due to be submitted? That will be the next one on the schedule, yes?

Apologies in advance for my city and Chicago Union Station. I travel through it every day, to and from work, and I have a fondness for it - but it isn't well organized or particularly comfortable, and if you're stuck there for a while the food choices are not great. It also gets very very crowded during rush hour. If you have long layovers there and if you trust Amtrack with your luggage, would you want to leave the station? There are some things you could do without going more than a block or 3 from the station... (different restaurant choices, willis tower, sitting by the river)

I actually like Union Station in Chicago; it's one of the better train stations that we pass frequently pass through. This trip, though, we'll be seeing it four times in fairly close proximity, with layovers from a couple hours to overnight, and we'll be traveling a mix of first class and coach, which means that the first class lounge with its luggage check will not be reliably available to us. The coach luggage lockers at Union Station tend to be unavailable on a random and unpredictable basis, depending on whether someone in DC has a bad hair day and declares an Multicolored Alert.

Amtrak Lounges

If you have a first class to coach or coach to first class connection you can use the first class lounge the day your first class ticket is/was valid. We found out last summer that the lounges and their facilities are available to both incoming and outgoing first class passengers. We arrived in the morning on first class tickets and were scheduled to leave in the evening on coach. We showed our used-that-day tickets and were allowed to use the lounge in Chicago until our train departed. Hope this helps with the luggage storage situation.

Long-time lurker,
Janet B.
